A VISIONARY APPROACH

As the first recipient of a Music Minor from North Carolina State University, in addition to performing engagements, my studies in classical guitar with world-renowned classical guitarists Ed Stephenson and Rob Nathanson (founding and active members of the North Carolina Guitar Quartet) afforded me a formal foundation in music composition, technique, and interpretation. Furthermore, I received a Certificate of Completion in Jazz Performance from Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA and was part of a select group of students chosen to perform at the program’s closing ceremonies. Coursework in jazz composition and improvisation provided the opportunity to experience performance roles in fusion bands, jazz ensembles, and an R&B group while the immediate vibrant urban environment offered artistically inspiring experiences outside of the academic agenda. Upon completion of my undergraduate studies in 1993, my senior recital echoed these experiences, opening with solo guitar pieces for classical guitar and closing with a traditional “bop” era jazz set with an accompanying ensemble. I am an excellent composer for diverse genres, recently receiving a Master of Arts Degree in Media Arts with a concentration in Music Composition and Production for Film, Multi-media, and the Performing Arts from Long Island University/Brooklyn Campus (January 2008), in addition to completing further coursework relative to film scoring and music composition at New York University. For the spring 2008 scholastic semester, I have been an Adjunct Lecturer with the Music Department at Queensborough College/CUNY, teaching a music sequencing course and supporting lab. I have continued to enhance my musicianship through private instruction and workshop attendance.

A participating member of The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers since 1999, my songwriting and production work has been included on two internationally distributed releases (DAMAGE RECORDS) and in January 2008, I licensed original music for the upcoming documentary, Vaccine Nation, by Gary Null & Associates. My independent artistic efforts as well as performance and studio work for other artists continue to demonstrate growth, reinvention, and joy of experimentation. Presently, my instrumental composition and production work reflect a minimalist practice presenting a solo instrument with the embellishment of accompanying instrumentation and sound effects, building atmospheric soundscapes. Intimate singer/songwriter performances project lyrical tribulations of personal experience through acoustic guitar and voice while rock performance and recording projects featuring outlandish electronic instrumentation reveal a dark and distinct articulation of popular song craft. More recently, I have performed avant-garde works for electric guitar combining structured pieces with improvisational interludes in unison with visual artists and gallery curators for art openings and artist events. To enhance my perspective and understanding of creative expression, I have begun to examine movement through the healing arts while developing novice acrylic painting techniques. My enduring relationship with music continues to serve as my most profound experience of the creative process, and to inspire me to further expression.
